latest versions support direct-x 9.0a
eairler versions do not sopport direct-x after 7.0
works best if you install direct-x 6.0->7.0->8.0->9.0 all 4 in order since direct-x wont go backward. I think there some files on direct-x 7.0 needed for later support (7.0 comes on cd) you can get direct-x from www.microsoft.com/downloads
